On the Other Side by Teuta Metra combines the prospect
of danger with the hopes of finding true love, and is my favorite of her novels!
Rita, a young Albanian woman, finds herself doing anything
and everything to find the love of her life Samuel after he seems to have vanished. From stealing identities to
cross the border and putting her faith in complete strangers, Rita is taking
more risks than ever. But before she can find Samuel, her plan is derailed
because someone wants her dead.
Rita’s journey is recounted while she’s in a comatose state,
and her struggles and emotions become real for the reader. There is little separation
between the voices of the past in her head and the ones of reality surrounding
her now. Teuta makes experiencing both sides easy without compromising the
progression of the story.
Teuta writes this story with affection as she shares some of the everyday struggles for Albanian women. All the characters are filled with kindness, understand the importance of helping others, and illustrate perfectly that everyone has something to offer. On the Other Side will be added to my stack of books to read again and again.
